WHIRL - Part 6 (Mel Cowan)
EXT. ROOF - NIGHT
Echo sits on the roof of the co-op, listening to Mississippi John Hurt through gigantic headphones, which are attached to a hand-cranked gramophone record player. Gustav has a tiny piece of paper on which is written, “The devil you know.” in calligraphy. He ties it to the leg of a pigeon that he has in his jacket pocket and sets it free. It flies away across the buildings.
GUSTAV: Two sides of the same coin.
ECHO: You’re dangerous.
GUSTAV: We all are.
ECHO: I remember having a glowworm toy from when I was a kid. He would sit on my windowsill during the day and then glow during the night. I wonder if he’s sad that he doesn’t get to glow anymore.
Gustav doesn’t look at Echo.
GUSTAV: You’re pregnant, aren’t you?
Echo picks up a pair of goggles and puts them on. She makes a face like she’s a fish in an aquarium.
ECHO: I wish I was black.
